Butter — Terms of Service
Last updated 16 October 2026
T1What These Terms Apply To
1.1Butter — the app, its features and everything delivered through it (collectively, the "Service") — is a place to plan presents, remember birthdays and anniversaries, and talk those plans through, in private one-on-one chats and video calls, with people who follow one another. Its developer (the "Maker") operates it.
1.2Using the Service in any way, from installing or launching it onward, counts as agreeing to these Terms.
1.3Guidelines, rules and notices the Maker posts for the Service belong to these Terms. Where one of them conflicts with these Terms, that guideline governs the point in question.
T2Words With Fixed Meanings
- "Participant" — a person whose registration under T4 has been accepted.
- "Points" — in-app entitlements usable solely within the Service. They carry no cash value and can be neither exchanged for money or anything else nor paid back.
- "Content" — any text, photo, video, sound, sticker or other material shown in, or passed along through, the Service.
T3Personal Information
Personal information is treated with care according to the Butter Privacy Policy, which appears on this same page.
T4Becoming a Participant
4.1Applications are made by following the in-app steps; the Maker's acceptance completes registration.
4.2Registration is open to adults of 18 and older only. Applying is a representation and guarantee by the applicant of being 18 or above.
4.3An application may be turned down, with no obligation to explain why, when for example:
- information in it is untrue;
- the applicant has a past violation of these Terms;
- the applicant has not reached 18;
- the applicant is a member of, or connected with, organized crime or similar anti-social forces;
- the Maker judges the registration inappropriate for any other reason.
T5Looking After Sign-In Credentials
5.1Keeping one's ID and password safe is each Participant's own job. Credentials may not be given, loaned, disclosed or shared to anybody.
5.2Any sign-in made with credentials matching those on record may be regarded by the Maker as the registered Participant's own.
5.3Damage from a third party's use of a Participant's credentials is not the Maker's responsibility, save for cases of the Maker's intent or gross negligence.
T6Points
6.1Points come from purchases or from fulfilling conditions the Maker announces. The Maker may also hand them out at no charge.
6.2Refunds, exchanges and cash conversions of Points are not available, other than where legally mandated or specifically approved by the Maker.
6.3Points lapse in full when a Participant has not signed in for 180 days, and the balance is then gone.
6.4Acquiring Points by deceit, through a means of payment one has no right to use, by exploiting malfunctions or errors, or by any other wrongful route is forbidden. On discovering such acquisition, the Maker may void those Points, limit the Participant's access, or remove the registration.
6.5Points still held when a Participant leaves or is removed lapse without any compensation.
T7Conduct Butter Does Not Allow
Within the Service, Participants may not:
- violate laws or offend public order and morality;
- engage in conduct linked to criminal activity;
- infringe copyrights, trademarks or other intellectual property, likeness, privacy, honor, or any further right or lawful interest of the Maker, fellow Participants or third parties;
- burden the networks, servers or systems behind the Service beyond reason;
- obstruct the Service's operation;
- access, or attempt to access, anything without authorization;
- gather, keep or exploit other Participants' information without their agreement;
- pursue illegal or wrongful aims through the Service;
- cause others damage, disadvantage, annoyance or distress;
- impersonate anybody;
- carry out advertising, marketing, solicitation or sales the Maker has not authorized;
- seek encounters with strangers of the opposite sex through the Service;
- supply anti-social forces with benefits of any kind, whether directly or through others;
- transmit or post obscene content, child sexual abuse material, or anything amounting to child abuse;
- acquire Points wrongfully;
- engage in any other conduct the Maker deems inappropriate.
T8Pauses and Outages
8.1Some or all of the Service may be halted or interrupted without warning in situations such as:
- upkeep, checks, repairs or upgrades of the underlying systems;
- natural disasters, fires, blackouts or other force majeure events that make operation difficult;
- accidental failure of hardware or telecommunications;
- any other circumstances in which the Maker finds continued operation difficult.
8.2Losses to Participants or others resulting from such a halt are not the Maker's responsibility unless caused by its intent or gross negligence.
T9Changing What Butter Offers
Following prior notice, the Maker may alter, extend, suspend or discontinue features of the Service or the Service itself, and is not responsible for resulting losses.
T10Limiting or Removing an Account
10.1The Maker may, without warning, limit a Participant's access, void their Points or remove their registration where the Participant:
- breaches these Terms in any respect;
- turns out to have supplied untrue registration information;
- has had their payment method stopped;
- leaves fees or other obligations unpaid;
- stays unreachable for some time;
- leaves the Service unused for some time;
- is considered by the Maker, for any other reason, unfit to continue.
10.2Losses flowing from measures under this clause are not the Maker's responsibility.
T11Leaving Butter
11.1Participants can leave whenever they wish by completing the leaving procedure the Maker offers.
11.2Leaving accelerates every outstanding obligation to the Maker; all such amounts fall due and must be settled right away.
11.3Points held upon leaving lapse and are not refunded.
11.4A former Participant's information is treated as described in T3 and the Privacy Policy and, unless legally required to be retained, may be erased after a fixed period.
T12Notices
12.1The Maker decides the channels through which notices and communications are exchanged.
12.2The contact details a Participant registered are treated as current until a change is reported through the designated procedure. A notice dispatched to them counts as received upon dispatch.
T13No Transfer
Participants may not assign, transfer, lease, use as security or in any other way dispose of their contractual status, or the rights and obligations arising from it, to another party without the Maker's written approval given beforehand.
T14Amending These Terms
14.1Without seeking individual agreement, the Maker may amend these Terms if:
- the amendment serves Participants' general interests; or
- the amendment is consistent with this agreement's purpose and reasonable considering its necessity, the appropriateness of the new terms, and other circumstances.
14.2Ahead of the effective date, the Maker will make known the amended content and when it takes effect.
T15Warranties and the Limit on Liability
15.1The Maker makes no warranty, explicit or implicit, that the Service is without factual or legal flaws, including flaws in safety, dependability, accuracy, completeness, effectiveness, fitness for a given purpose or security, as well as errors, bugs, or the violation of anyone's rights.
15.2Except for its own intent or gross negligence, the Maker is not responsible for any damage Participants incur in relation to the Service.
15.315.2 does not apply when the agreement with a Participant counts as a consumer contract as defined by Japan's Consumer Contract Act. In that case too, damage stemming from special circumstances is excluded, and compensation for damage due to the Maker's negligence other than gross negligence will not exceed the fees the Participant paid in the calendar month the damage arose.
15.4Transactions, exchanges and disputes between a Participant and other Participants or outside parties are theirs to settle; the Maker bears no responsibility for them.
T16Governing Law and Court
16.1The law of Japan applies to these Terms.
16.2The court with jurisdiction over the Maker's location serves as the exclusive agreed court of first instance for disputes concerning the Service.
Butter — Privacy Policy
Last updated 16 October 2026
P1Scope of This Policy
Here the developer of Butter (the "Maker") sets out what it does with information relating to Participants, meaning people who use Butter: what is gathered, the reasons, the circumstances of disclosure, and the options available.
P2What Gets Collected
- Account information: email address, password, authentication tokens and comparable data needed to create and maintain an account.
- Profile information: display name, profile photo and other items a Participant decides to publish.
- Device and activity information: handset model, OS version, IP address, server logs of access, crash diagnostics and a history of activity in the Service.
- Transaction information: records of past purchases and their state. Apple or a comparable payment processor handles card numbers and payment specifics; the Maker never holds them.
P3Camera, Microphone and Video Calls
3.1For video calls, Butter requests permission to use the camera and microphone.
3.2Call audio and video serve solely to connect the parties in real time. Call audio and video are never recorded, monitored, intercepted or kept on servers permanently by the Maker, unless legally compelled or responding to an official request made under the law.
P4Purposes
- running, operating, maintaining and enhancing the Service;
- managing accounts and verifying identity;
- handling enquiries, reports and requests;
- stopping, spotting and investigating unauthorized access, abuse, Terms violations and security issues;
- studying usage trends to raise quality, functionality, safety and usability;
- informing Participants of updates, maintenance, revisions to this Policy and other important matters.
P5Disclosure to Others
Personal information goes to third parties only with the Participant's consent, apart from these situations:
- disclosure is mandated by law;
- it is necessary for protecting a person's life, health or assets and obtaining consent is difficult;
- it is necessary for investigating or responding to fraud, intrusion, security incidents or Terms violations;
- other situations allowed by law.
P6Outside Services and Kits
The Maker may rely on services, SDKs and similar components from other companies, for authentication, crash diagnostics, analytics and the like, to provide the Service and keep it stable, high-quality and secure. These companies may obtain data under the privacy terms each of them publishes.
P7Protecting Information
The Maker applies reasonable measures, within what an individual developer can realistically do, against leakage, loss, destruction, intrusion, tampering and abuse of personal information. Because the internet can never be entirely safe, absolute security is not promised.
P8Account Deletion
8.1Accounts can be deleted from the in-app settings, or by asking through the support email listed under Contact Us below.
8.2Once an account is deleted, related personal information is erased within a reasonable time. Retention may continue where it is needed for legal compliance, payment administration, settling disputes, preventing fraud, keeping systems secure, or other legitimate operational purposes.
P9Revisions
This Policy may be revised in response to legal developments, new or modified features, a change in outside services, or changes in operations. Significant revisions will be communicated in the app or by other appropriate means. Revisions take effect upon publication unless otherwise indicated.
Butter — Contact Us
Email Butter support:
butter-cs@outlook.jp
You've reached Butter's support page. Questions about using the app, problem reports, requests to delete an account, and suggestions can all go to the email address above, and each one gets read.
To speed things up, you can include what happened, the screen involved, the iPhone and iOS release you're on, and the address you registered. It's fine to leave any of that out.
C1A One-Person Operation
Butter is developed and maintained by a single person, so a response may be slow and some messages may not get a personal reply.
C2Responses
Where a reply is needed, one will be sent as far as possible, though replies to all messages aren't promised. Issues that call for a fix may be resolved in a later release of the app.
C3Trouble Between Users
Disagreements, harassment and other problems between users are not mediated by the developer, who accepts no responsibility for them. To stop hearing from someone, block them from within the app.
C4Purchases
If a purchase goes badly wrong (for example, paid content is missing after you've paid), email the address above and it will be looked into and dealt with.
C5Making Sure Replies Reach You
Spam filters and sender restrictions can stop replies. Please allow mail from butter-cs@outlook.jp.
